Things You’ll Know Only If You Live In Kolkata

When we hear a word “Kolkata”, we immediately imagine about Durga Puja and Roshogulla. But being a city of joy, there are so many things to explore. I have so many things to share but It is not possible to describe all the things in one article. I will try to cover all the possible features of Kolkata in this article and in next coming articles.

First thing you will notice after entering Kolkata is Yellow Ambassador Taxis, Hand pulled Rickshaws and Heritage Tram. People use railways, underground metro rail and buses for travelling. You will get shuttle cabs to travel from one corner of Kolkata to another corner.

Hand pulled Rickshaws and trams give that vintage touch to streets.

You can enjoy Boat ride in Hugli river near Howrah Bridge.

While travelling in a bus, you will notice very unique style of holding cash by bus conductor.

If you give Rs. 100 note and ask for Rs 7 ticket, he will give you your ticket without any irritation.

You will hear all time favorite dialogue of Bus conductor “aaste LADIES….kole bachhaaa…”

If you want to travel by bus you will find two type of bus service, one superfast and one is super slow. No speed limit to buses. They compete with other bus drivers as bus drivers are the king of the roads. I think people from Kolkata will agree to this.

Some bus drivers drive like they are not on road, so slow speed, as people sitting in the bus are there for Kolkata darshan. They will stop at every turn and corner and invite people to come. Even if There are no passengers in the bus stop, still the conductor screams “bae rekhe, bae rekhe” and then goes “new town.. science city.. exide.. ”

If you ask them “what is the problem? Why bus is so slow?” you will get a silent reply with very silent face, “baki koi toh kuch nahi bol raha” or “bus khali hai.. full hone tak aisehi chalega…”.

People are very kind and not aggressive at all. They are ready to help you any time.

You will notice group of people playing cards and carrom board on the corner of the cozy streets. This is best way to pass the time for people.

Bengalis are known as foodies. Bengal is famous for fish preparations and Bengali sweets. In Kolkata so many things you will get to eat, starting from street food to good restaurants.

In street food you will get JhalMuri, Puchka, different types of Rolls & bhaja.

Chaiwala will offer you chaa (tea) in Kullad.

There are so many options in sweets, but only roshogulla is famous all over India, apart from roshogulla and sondesh you must try Mishti Doi (sweetened yogurt with rich notes of jiggery), Patishapta. You must try nolen gurer ice cream.

Same for other food, Bengali people are popular for their maach (Fish) preparations and their cravings for fish items. Doi Maach (Fish with yogurt gravy), Macher Paturi (fish wrapped in banana leaf with mustard paste and cooked in steam) , Chingri Macher Malaikari, Gondhoraj bhetki, Daab Chingri are famous fish dishes in Kolkata.

I think there are so many Bengalis who are vegetarian and so many vegetarian dishes are tasty by their unique preparation like mochar ghonto, dhokar dalna, aloo poshto, different types of bhaja etc. West Bengal needs to advertise other Bengali dishes also.

One can have a full meal at Rs 25 and the other at Rs 1000 in the same area. It is the character of a true “city of joy”.

If you heard BADAM, it’s not an almond, it’s a Peanut.
