Pigmentation: Skin Disorder after 30

Pigmentation: Skin Disorder after 30

Skin Pigmentation is a disease which affects your skin tone in patches. Both young and old can be affected by dark spots like pigmentation, and hyper-pigmentation on the skin. Most of the ladies accept brown patches of pigmentation as part of growing older.

Skin pigmentation disorders affect the color of your skin. Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin, a pigment produced by melanocyte cells in the skin. The darker the skin, the more melanin it contains. Melanin also performs another vital function: It protects the skin against harmful UV rays.

Pigmentation can be of two types, one is Hypopigmentation and another is Hyperpigmentation. Hypopigmentation means where patches of skin become lighter or whiter in colour than the normal surrounding skin & Hyperpigmentation means patches of skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin.

Pigmentation can be caused due to:

  • Genetics
  • Sun exposure
  • Stress
  • Hormonal changes caused by pregnancy and or by birth control pills, menopause, and insulin resistance.
  • Overexposure to sun rays
  • Air pollution
  • Toxins in our food,
  • Damaging cell walls and connective tissue
